Surely it should just be "they wanted to bum Paul" rather than "bum off him" - the latter suggesting to me that they want him to give them something - like when you bum a drink off someone. Mind you if they want him to give them his bum it could still work.
Are you sure you have the correct phrasing? Still such a Manchester newbie ;)
